“Are you a business person who happens to be Christian, or are you a Christian who happens to be a business person?”

I was new in my faith and new to university. I began attending a great church, and after a Sunday service, one of the leaders asked me to coffee. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but he said he was buying.

I don’t remember much of the conversation, but I do vividly remember him asking me, “Steve, are you a university student who happens to be a Christian, or are you a Christian who happens to be a university student?” In other words, he was asking me what was central to my identity and purpose–and what wasn’t.

It’s a question I won’t forget and I wrestled with my answer for a long time. Like all great questions, it made me think deeply. It helped me clarify my values and priorities. It also encouraged me to seek out and listen to God. I was a student, but that question has been powerful for me as I’ve grown in my faith and my level of responsibility.

As a business owner, it can be all too easy to leave your faith at your office door. After all, the business world is tough–at best tolerant and inclusive of different belief systems–at worst downright hostile to the mere mention of faith in matters of business.

Your business is a gift from God. It’s a unique opportunity to expand and apply your faith through service to your customers, employees, and suppliers. Do your products and services represent your faith?

“My favorite business book is the bible. If you study the bible…you will be absolutely amazed; it has everything.

– Strive Masiyiwa
