The launch of two new classes of the Arrow Leadership Program in 2013 will provide opportunity for 50 Christian leaders to experience Arrow’s personalized, intentional and transformational leadership development process.

For Christian leaders aged 25-40 serving in the church and parachurch, the Emerging Stream focuses primarily on personal, pastoral and ministry leadership. This 36th Class of the Arrow Leadership Program launches in mid-June with the first residential in September 2013. Helping leaders to understand God’s unique calling for their life and ministry, cultivate a greater depth of character, and develop critical competencies for relevant, authentic leadership and evangelism are all key outcomes for this new class.

Arrow’s Executive Stream carefully crafted to meet the leadership development needs of Executive Christian Leaders (of any age) in both ministry and marketplace positions. This stream specifically focuses on practical personal, team and organizational leadership training and seeks to maximize the effectiveness of executive leaders and their organizations. Arrow’s 37th Class launches September 30th, 2013 with the first residential in January 2014.

Arrow is now accepting leader recommendations and applications for both classes.

As the Arrow Leadership Program launches into it’s 21st year, it’s new 34th Class will include ministry leaders from eight Canadian provinces and one territory along with leaders serving in the United States as well as internationally. This new class will also pilot an updated program format.

Arrow’s Canadian President Dr. Steve Brown comments below on the update to the Emerging Stream using a Q and A format:

Q. Why is Arrow updating the Emerging Stream program format?

Continuous improvement is part of our approach to leadership development. We are constantly inviting feedback from participants as well as partner organizations. We also recognize that we are in a time of tremendous societal change. This means that we are regularly updating and making changes to the program.

Secondly, like many non-profits, Arrow has been working to reduce our reliance on donor funding while keeping participant fees accessible for leaders and organizations. This strategic focus launched a prayerful and creative process in spring 2012 to look for ways to improve the business model while not detracting from Arrow’s transformational impact.

Q. Is this different from what Arrow’s been doing for twenty years?

No. The updated format builds on Arrow’s long-standing multi-layered, personalized, intentional and transformative approach to leadership development. The Emerging Stream continues to be a journey in community over time for Christian ministry leaders (ages 25-40).

In addition, the core foundation for the Emerging Stream will continue to focus around increasing self-awareness through assessment feedback, cultivating deep character through intensive mentoring, residential learning with top practitioners, a blended focus on evangelism and leadership as well as dynamic academic partnerships.

Q. What are the most significant changes to the Emerging Stream?

After feedback from several alumni focus groups and much dialogue with leadership development specialists on our team and externally, there are two significant changes:

1. 20-month Journey – Three Six-Day Residentials – Moving to three residentials matches the proven Executive Stream format. Moving to six days per residential allows more creativity on the program-side while reducing costs and travel time for Arrow and participants.

2. Fee Structure Change – Participant fees for future classes will increase from $8000 to $9000. This increase will help reduce Arrow’s dependence on external funding and is largely offset for the participant through one less flight expense.

Q. What are some of the enhancements that benefit program participants?

Virtual Learning Connections – We are adding several on-line webinar-style learning connections between residentials. This will help continue momentum between residentials and will provide high-value/low-cost learning opportunities with top practitioners on key topics that may not be a one-day focus at a residential.

Additional Assessment Support – Arrow’s assessment process is a key ingredient to the program. Every participant currently meets one-on-one with our psychologist and we want to make more support and feedback around assessment available to participants and our on-site mentors.

Increased Focus – Adult-Learning Styles – We are developing several experiential learning activities and working with our gifted training team to keep pace with the changing demographics and learning styles of participants.

Renewed Emphasis on Spiritual Disciplines, Self-Care and Evangelism – These three areas cannot be compartmentalized. The updated curriculum further integrates these key areas throughout the entire Arrow journey.

More Focused Peer Learning – Our leadership clusters can be profound environments of learning, care and resourcing. By developing a volunteer role to champion peer learning, we look forward to even greater impact.

Greater Spouse Engagement – Our wholistic approach already involves participant spouses in the assessment process and on-site during residential three. We are now adding a spouse orientation conference call ahead of residential one and a webinar on assessment to continue to inform, include and support spouses, marriages and families.

Q. Is there still space for leaders to join the next class?

The 34th Class of the Arrow Leadership Program – Emerging Stream is full and launched in the summer. This class will pilot the updated format but we are inviting recommendations for participants for the summer 2013 launch of our 36th class. You can recommend a leader at: http://www.arrowleadership.org/program/recommend-a-leader/

Thank you for your interest in these new developments at Arrow. Please let Dr. Brown know if you have any questions or suggestions – steveb@arrowleadership.org

Building on a twenty-year partnership, Arrow Leadership and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary are pleased to announce an expanded opportunity for alumni of the Arrow Leadership Program to access Gordon-Conwell’s Doctor of Ministry program.

“The future looks even brighter with Arrow graduates now having more educational options for leadership education and formation, building on the solid foundation of the Arrow experience.” – Dr. Steven W. Klipowicz

This expanded partnership combines Arrow’s proven leadership development with the renowned theological education of Gordon-Conwell and enables academically qualified Arrow alumni to receive advanced standing in either the Christian Leadership or Pastoral Skills track. Leaders can continue their journey deeply focused on leadership (Christian Leadership track) or broaden their journey into larger pastoral issues of leadership, preaching, and care giving (Pastoral Skills track).

A graduate of both the Arrow Leadership Program and GCTS Doctor of Ministry, Dr. Steve Brown, Canadian President of Arrow Leadership remarks, “I believe these additional opportunities will benefit more Arrow leaders well into the future, provide more calendar entry points and locations as well as strengthen our long-time partnership with a world leader in theological education.”

Excited to see further opportunities for Arrow graduates to continue their leadership development through advanced educational pursuits, Dr. Steven W. Klipowicz, Director of Ministry Formation [GCTS] shares, “Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte is grateful for the 20 years of shared ministry with Arrow Leadership through the Arrow Doctor of Ministry program. The future looks even brighter with Arrow graduates now having more educational options for leadership education and formation, building on the solid foundation of the Arrow experience.”

Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, Dr. David A. Currie adds, “Arrow and Gordon-Conwell’s Doctor of Ministry Program have grown up together, sharing many of the same core values and approaches to transforming not only ministries, but ministers. As in any healthy relationship, growth involves change, so I am delighted about the opportunities for growth that changes in the advanced standing program for Arrow graduates in the DMin Program will create, allowing not only more flexibility in terms of entry points into doctoral studies, but greater opportunities for specialization, either continuing a tight focus on leadership or opening up more fully in Pastoral Skills.”

Arrow’s Canadian President, Dr. Steve Brown, highlights that, “Arrow graduates – from either the Emerging or Executive Streams – serving in non-profit, senior church or executive leadership, public service or marketplace leadership roles, will be attracted to Briercrest’s biblically-based modular program that features experienced professors from around North America. Receiving recognition for twelve credits demonstrates the intensity of their Arrow journey and provides a strong head start toward a high-quality Masters degree.”

This partnership has been a long time in the making. As Paul Magnus, President Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Leadership/Management at Briercrest shares, “From my early connections with Arrow, my dream was for us to partner together in the development of Kingdom leaders. Seeing this come to fruition was the realization of a fond dream. It is my sense that this partnership will have mutual benefit to both organizations and maximum benefit to the wonderful leaders investing in developing their leadership expertise in the 21st Century. What a delight it is to work with those students who have taken the Arrow leadership journey and then join us for additional leadership development in an academic setting. I delight in what this will do for leaders and leadership development in Canada and well beyond.”
